Methodology

The ranking formula

Every ranked list on Macomb Water Damage Restoration uses the same formula. Scores are normalized within the page (one place x one category), so a company's position depends only on how it compares to the other companies on that specific page.

• Verified review signal, 50%. Syndicated Google rating multiplied by the log of the review count, weighted down as reviews age past 24 months.
• Verification signal, 30%. 10 points for a current LARA licence, 10 points for a general-liability certificate of insurance on file, 10 points for a phone call we placed to the number listed, answered live, on a dated test call.
• Coverage fit, 20%. The share of the page's ZIP codes the company lists as served.

Floor. A rating below 3.5, or a lapsed licence, means the company is not listed on that page at all. Ties are broken by the recency of the company's last verified review.

• Licence lookup: every listed licence number links to the LARA licence search.
• Insurance: we require a general-liability certificate of insurance on file before a company is listed, and we show the date it was collected.
• Phone test: we call the number listed and record whether it was answered live, and on what date.

The exact formula

Score out of 1,000, the same on every list page. Ratings and reviews for every company on a list are read on the same day, from each company's public Google Business Profile.

• Reputation, 300 points. The rating, adjusted so a handful of 5-star reviews cannot beat hundreds of reviews averaging 4.8:adjusted = (v / (v + m)) × R + (m / (v + m)) × CR is the rating, v the number of ratings received, C = 4.7922 the mean rating across the companies in our data, and m = 15. An adjusted 3.5 earns 0 points and 5.0 earns 300.
• Volume, 100 points. Ratings received, on a log scale. 500 or more earns full points.
• Momentum, 150 points. Up to 100 points for reviews in the last 90 days (15 or more earns full points), and up to 50 for their average rating.
• Water-damage fit, 150 points. The share of written reviews that mention a water job: a leak, flood, basement, pipe, sump pump, ceiling, toilet, water heater, dishwasher, extraction or drying. Half or more earns full points. This rewards companies customers actually hire for water damage.
• Responsiveness, 100 points. The share of reviews the owner answered.
• Readiness, 200 points. 100 if the company's own website states 24/7 service, 100 if it states IICRC certification. Each card links the page we read.

Score out of 100, the same on every list page:

• 70 points — Bayesian-adjusted Google rating. Raw Google star ratings reward a company with one 5-star review over a company with 300 reviews averaging 4.8. We correct this with a weighted average:
  adjusted = (v / (v + m)) × R + (m / (v + m)) × Cwhere R is the company's Google rating, v is its review count, C = 4.7922 is the mean Google rating across the 90 (of 92) Macomb/Oakland companies in our data that carry a rating, and m = 15 is the "weight" given to that mean, chosen well below this dataset's median review count of 50 reviews. The adjusted rating (0-5) is then scaled to a 0-70 point score: points = (adjusted / 5) × 70.
• 15 points — IICRC certification stated. Awarded only if the company's own website states an IICRC certification; the page links the source.
• 15 points — 24/7 service stated. Awarded only if the company's own website states 24/7 or around-the-clock availability; the page links the source.

Floor. A company with no rating on file, or a rating under 3.5, is not scored and does not appear on a ranked list. Ties are broken by review count.

"Top-rated {year}" badge. Awarded to the top 3 companies by this formula on a given list, and only if that company also has a Google rating of at least 4.5 and at least 20 reviews. Never sold. Never a separate scoring input — it is applied only after the formula has already run. Recomputed from fresh data every year; a badge from an earlier year does not carry forward.

Where the facts come from

Every "why choose this provider" fact on a list page — a stated service, 24/7 availability, IICRC certification, a founding year — was read directly from that company's own website in a single research pass, dated on the page, with the source URL linked. A fact with no page it could be read from is not stored, and never appears. Google rating and review count are shown as plain text with "Google, checked {date}" and are never encoded as AggregateRating schema markup (Google does not allow third-party review markup as your own).

List membership (who appears on a page)

A company appears on a town's list only if its office is in that town, or its own website states it serves that town or that town's county — with the source URL stored. A company appears under a service category only if its own website states that service. A list page is only built at all if 3 or more companies qualify; otherwise the URL returns HTTP 410.

Money posture (pass 3)

No company can pay for a position on any "Best companies in {town}" list. If a listed company is ever a paying client of the site's owner, the listing says so.
